Is the skid plate on a Jeep Wrangler actually important?

I have a 2004 Jeep wrangler, and whenever I put the skid plate on (the thing that covers the muffler and tranfer case on the bottom of the jeep), the 4 wheel drive cuts out. instead of blowing a bunch of money for a mechanic to fix this, i want to just

YOU NEED A SUPPORT FOR THE TRANSMISSION AND TRANSFER CASE. No you cannot remove it! No one said this already????

If you remove it then you'll have to make up a support bar, not hard I did it on my rock crawler CJ7.
