CHITTORGARH
About
the City
Chittorgarh, lying in the
south-eastern part of Rajasthan state is 90 km from Udaipur is one major
place for tourist's interest. This fortified city is known for its massive
forts, temples, palaces, which depict the rich culture & tradition of
Rajput dynasties.
History
Chittorgarh was the capital of
the former Rajput state Mewar and the history of this town is written in
blood & sacrifice. From 8th to 16th century this town of Rajasthan was
ruled by the
Sisodia
dynasty & during this period it was three times
attacked by muslim rulers. It is famous for its personalities like
Maharana Pratap,
Meera Bai,
Rani Padmini, Rana Kumbh etc.

Must See in Chittorgarh
Chittor Fort :
This massive fort has
many getways built by the
Maurya rulers in 7th century AD on a height of
180 m high hill and covers over an area of 700 acres. The main gates are
Padam Pol, Hanuman Pol,
Ram Pol. The fort has many magnificent monuments
like
Fateh Prakash Palace, Rana Kumbh's Palace, Tower of Victory etc.
which are fine example of
Rajput architecture.
Vijaya Stambh or Victory Tower :
This 37 m high structure is built in
1440 AD by Rana Kumbh
a
powerful ruler to celebrate his victory over the Muslim rulers. This
nine storied high limestone structure is a major tourist destination in
the city.
Other Attractions
Kirti Stambh :
Kirti
Stambh or the Tower of Fame was built in 12th century and dedicated to
the first Jain Tirthankar and it has a height of 22m.
Rana Kumbha's Palace :
This ruin palace was belived to have been built by Rana Hamir and has a
great historical & architectural importance. It is believed that
Rani
Padmini committed Jauhar
when the city was attacked by mughal.
Kalika Mata Temple :
This
was built in 8th century as a Sun Temple and later in 14th century it
was converted in to Kalika Mata Temple, dedicated to goddess Kali.
Bassi Wildlife sanctuary :
The sanctuary is situated near Bassi which houses several wildlife
animals like panthers, wild boars, antelopes and many migratory birds.
Festivals in Chittorgarh
All major festivals including
Dipawali,
Holi, Gangaur,
Dussehra,
Rakshbandhan are celebrated in the
city.
Best Month to Visit October to March is the best period to visit the
city.
