is the active carbon/charcoal in aquarium filters safe to use as drinking water filter?

so for my science project, i have to build a water filtration system. That being said i decided to build one using an active carbon filter. What i was wondering was, are the active carbon filter used in fish tanks safe to use?
Believe me, if you are in a survival situation, you would consider yourself lucky to have your fish's "air" to drink...without additional treatment. So, if you are wanting to filter the water for human consumption, you're fine. For more serious
