Is it ok to run 12-2 wire in the hot water baseboard radiator?

I was thinking of running cable thru the baseboard casing not touching the pipes or fins but hung and stapled. Is this bad or can i get away with romex? Or is mc or conduit the way to go?
I would probably shy away from that move,go with the conduit and be safe.
