How many people in a 16', 16.5', and 17' canoe?

I'm trying to plan a camping trip that involves lots of canoeing. I know there are 3 seats in a 17' canoe, but can you fit 4 or 5 people in such a canoe? What about a 16.5' canoe?
Edit: we have gear. It's a 6 hour canoe ride.

I would say yes as long as you are not taking any gear with you. Also it will be a lot harder to steer the canoe with this weight. I would go with 3 to be safe and you can always come back and get the other two.
